Though it may seem like they are on two, opposite ends of the spectrum, music and math have a bond that is often overlooked. Whether we realize it or not, all music involves math in some way!

Music and math intertwine parts of the left brain and right brain that help support cognitive skills allowing students to tap into their own problem solving and creative abilities. The left side helps the musician focus on the problem in front of them, while the right brain focuses on playing the instrument. Math stimulates and utilizes these same parts of the brain when trying to solve math problems that are associated with reasoning and understanding.

 Just like math, music is also culpable for comparison skills. The ability to differentiate between hard sounds and soft sounds or high pitches and low pitches, is the same type of comparison that is done when distinguishing between positive and negative integers or high and low numbers. 

Like math, music involves a lot of counting in order to form a united solution that makes sense; or, in this case – sound. In both, we see chronological patterns, symbols and intervals. Finding the relationship between music and math may seem complex. Here are a few ways to help your students understand the connection between the two:

  • Play a song and have each student write down what patterns they recognize.
  • Have your students identify the song’s measure.
  • See if your students can find a relationship between the length of an instrument and its pitch.
